Moving to a new design tool is mostly about your existing files. FigCraft's file format notes (last updated 2026-10-14) are unusually candid about what works, so this guide follows them closely.
Option 1: open a .fig file
- In Figma, choose File ▸ Save local copy… to get a
.figfile. - In FigCraft, open it with File ▸ Open, drag it onto the window, or use
figcraft-clifrom a terminal. - Check each page against the original before you continue working.
Option 2: import a Figma REST API export
FigCraft also reads the JSON that Figma's REST API returns for a file
(GET /v1/files/:key), together with local variables JSON and an images/
folder. Its docs list pages, the layer tree, geometry, paints, strokes,
effects, text runs, vectors, auto layout, constraints, grids, components,
component sets and instances among what it maps. This route suits developers
who already use the Figma API.
Option 3: move assets one by one
For icons, illustrations and images, export from Figma and import into FigCraft:
- SVG comes in as editable vectors, with gradients, masks, clip paths and text as text layers.
- PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF and TIFF come in as images; embedded colour profiles are honoured.
Use the desktop app for all of this: the FigCraft web build (the one on this site) starts with one new document and does not have file dialogs yet, according to its hosting notes.
What does not come over
- Figma clipboard: copying layers in Figma and pasting into FigCraft does not work, because Figma's clipboard uses its own binary format.
- FigJam (.jam) and Figma Slides (.deck) files are out of scope.
- Figma plugins do not run in FigCraft.
- Video fills (MP4, MOV, WebM) and HEIC images are not supported yet.
Saving back to .fig
FigCraft can export a document to .fig experimentally (File ▸ Export…
▸ .fig, or figcraft-cli export file.figcraft -o out.fig). Layers, fills,
gradients, strokes, shadows, vectors, components and text are written; some
effects, images and prototype interactions are still unchecked. Don't rely on
it for client hand-off yet.

Questions people ask
Can FigCraft open .fig files?
Yes, on a best-effort basis. FigCraft reads the .fig zip and its compressed chunks, but its authors say import has not yet been checked against real-world files.
Can I paste from Figma into FigCraft?
Not Figma layers. Figma’s clipboard carries its own binary format, which FigCraft does not read. Pasting images, SVG and text works.
Can FigCraft save back to .fig?
Experimentally. FigCraft can export a whole document to .fig; its own docs list what is written and what is still unchecked, such as images and prototype interactions.
